Sensate of Place | ||
In Sensate of Place, I project emotional terrain onto the constructed world. Through these works I push the concept of "sense of place" toward an experience that is deeply somatic. Seen together, these paintings are like a walking meditation on how we are marked by the spaces we inhabit and in turn, how we mark/make them. The human figure isn't immediately apparent in these works, but is implied in the encaustic surfaces that I see as skin. Repeating linear elements lead into each painting and interact with bodily forms. To build up those lines I stretch and press fabric pieces such as netting or string into thick, layers of wax pigment. Undulating impressions left by the fabric suggest cityscapes, calendars, and maps that reflect the subjective nature of time and place. Much like an actual cityscape, these paintings appear to move and change in natural light as the sun plays across the textures. | ||
